The History Of Capoeira -- The Brazilian Capoeira Academy - San Antonio

jun 30, 2017

The history of Capoeira is steeped in mystery. During the 1500s, the Portuguese began a brutal slave trade that forced millions of Africans to Brazil to work. The slaves were from different tribes, cultures and religions. They spoke different languages. Out of this oppression, the slaves created Capoeira. Disguised to look like a dance, Capoeira was created with songs, musical instruments and acrobatic movements. It is a fight disguised as a dance.

Over the years, many slaves would use their Capoeira to escape into the woods, where they would set up villages and communities and further train Capoeira to maintain their freedom. Capoeira also acted as a medium to bring people from different tribes and backgrounds together in unity against their oppressors.

After centuries of oppression, Brazil became the last nation to abolish slavery in 1888. At this time, many of the freed slaves moved into the larger cities looking for work. In the 1930s, Mestre Bimba (Manoel dos Reis Machado) opened the first official Capoeira school. This began a new phase in Capoeira's history as the art form moved from the streets into an academy setting. Today, Capoeira is practiced all over the world. It is the second most popular sport in Brazil (next to soccer). Continuing its tradition, Capoeira still brings people together and gives them a community to belong to. It still offers freedom to those who practice it: freedom of movement, clarity and focus of mind, and freedom through improved health.

    • I started training with Brazilian Capoeira in January 2011 as something to supplement my running. I've never been one for working out in gyms and weight lifting. For me, Capoeira has great core workout. Think Tae Bo, Power Yoga and music rolled into one workout. READ MORE

I was looking for something active for my youngest daughter (age 11) to do, and we had tried a Taekwondo school and Shaolin-do school. My daughter was unimpressed with Shaolin-do and I was thoroughly disgusted by the teachers at the Taekwondo money-pit. READ MORE
